Description

The UR-SHA is an advanced, high-voltage power supply module belonging to the GE Multilin Universal Relay (UR) platform. Positioned as a hardware upgrade belonging to the UR-SH generational tier, this module delivers stable internal logic operating voltages to adjacent central processing, communication, and I/O cards within the UR chassis. It is designed as a drop-in replacement for obsolete first-generation (UR-1H) and second-generation (UR-RH) power supply units.

Field Integration & Architectural Upgrades

When upgrading an existing Universal Relay chassis or replacing a legacy supply module with the UR-SHA, consider the following field engineering factors:

  • Thermal Efficiency Gains: The UR-SH generation features a 28% efficiency improvement over legacy 35 W units (UR-1H/UR-RH). By reducing the heat dissipation footprint while outputting 45 W of power, the UR-SHA minimizes localized thermal buildup inside sealed protection cabinets, extending the lifespan of adjacent microprocessors.
  • Slot Restrictions: The power supply module must be installed strictly in the designated power supply slot on the far left side of the UR chassis (typically Slot A). Attempting to seat this card into standard I/O slots will damage the backplane connectors.
  • Firmware and Hardware Interlocks: The increased isolation voltage (2,300 V AC versus the legacy 2,000 V AC) enhances surge immunity against substation switching transients. No software or firmware changes are required in the EnerVista setup when swapping from an older generation high-voltage supply to the UR-SHA, as the physical backplane interface remains pin-compatible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this module be used in a low-voltage 24 V DC battery bank system?

No. The UR-SHA is explicitly configured for the high-voltage range (88–300 V DC or 85–265 V AC). Connecting this module to a 24 V DC or 48 V DC battery circuit will fail to turn on the relay. For low-voltage direct current environments, a low-voltage variant (such as the UR-SLA or legacy equivalents) must be specified.

What causes the UR-SHA to shut down automatically in the field?

The module incorporates an onboard over-temperature protection sensor. If internal component temperatures hit +105 °C (+221 °F)—often caused by a blocked cabinet ventilation fan or severe overloading from too many high-draw analog output cards in the same chassis—the power supply will shut off to prevent component damage. The relay will reboot once temperatures fall back into the safe operating region.

Can this module be hot-swapped while the primary protection loops are live?

No. The Universal Relay platform does not support online hot-swapping of the primary power supply module. Extracting the UR-SHA while the breaker is shut will instantly kill power to the relay’s internal CPU, causing an immediate loss of protection tracking and triggering an upstream “Relay Fail” alarm. The associated breaker panel circuit must be isolated before replacing the card.
