Get the engineering breakdown of the Siemens 6ES7422-1BL00-0AA0 S7-400 digital output card. Real-world current limits, wiring tips, and alternatives.
Main Body
During a 2:00 AM emergency call-out at a wastewater treatment plant, a blown terminal block showed us exactly why the 0.5 A per channel rating on this module is a hard physical limit. If you exceed this threshold, the electronically clocked short-circuit protection kicks in, but persistent overloads can still cook the output transistors over time. The module we are evaluating is the Siemens 6ES7422-1BL00-0AA0 (SM 422), a high-density 32-point digital output card designed for the SIMATIC S7-400 PLC rack.

By isolating the 32 outputs into four independent groups of eight, Siemens allows you to run different voltage sources for separate process areas. Powering these output circuits requires a 24 V DC supply connected directly to the front connector.
Do you have high-inrush inductive loads like large solenoid valves or heavy contactor coils? If so, this card is not recommended for those applications without external interposing relays. The individual 0.5 A limit means that even standard lamp loads exceeding 5 W can trigger the internal protection circuitry. Under thermal stress—especially in sealed cabinets with poor airflow—the total current per group must be de-rated to 2 A once temperatures pass 40 °C.
Well, technically, the internal shutdown voltage is limited to -27 V for inductive loads, but we always suggest adding flyback diodes directly at the coil terminals to prevent premature card failure. For high-current switching, consider the 16-channel 6ES7422-1BH11-0AA0 instead, which handles up to 2 A per channel.
For standard solenoid banks and indicator panels, however, this 32-point module is highly efficient. Keeping a spare on-site serves as an excellent insurance policy for high-density S7-400 systems facing long factory lead times.
