Product Overview

The MOTOROLA MVME-5100 is a high-performance VMEbus single-board computer designed for embedded computing and industrial control systems. Built on Motorola’s PowerPlus II architecture, the board integrates PowerPC processors with optimized PCI and memory controller subsystems to deliver reliable computing performance for real-time applications.

In many mission-critical systems—such as telecommunications infrastructure, industrial automation platforms, and aerospace control systems—embedded computers must process large volumes of data while maintaining deterministic response times. This single-board computer performs those tasks by combining a powerful PowerPC processor, high-bandwidth memory architecture, and VMEbus connectivity within a compact 6U module.

The board also includes integrated networking and expansion capabilities, enabling system designers to connect sensors, data acquisition modules, and communication interfaces through PMC expansion slots and VMEbus backplane connectivity. With support for real-time operating systems such as VxWorks, Linux, and QNX, Motorola embedded computing boards are widely used in applications requiring stable, long-term operation in demanding industrial environments.

Key Functions

High-Performance Embedded Processing

The board uses PowerPC processors such as MPC7410 or MPC750 with clock speeds up to around 450 MHz. This architecture provides reliable computational performance for real-time control, signal processing, and embedded data analysis tasks.

VMEbus System Integration

The module connects directly to VME or VME64 backplanes, enabling integration with a wide range of industrial I/O modules, communication boards, and data acquisition hardware. This makes it suitable for scalable embedded control systems.

PMC Expansion Capability

Two PMC (PCI Mezzanine Card) slots allow additional functionality such as high-speed communication interfaces, specialized I/O modules, or storage controllers to be added without redesigning the system hardware.

Integrated Networking and I/O

The board includes dual 10/100 Ethernet ports and serial interfaces, allowing embedded systems to communicate with network controllers, supervisory monitoring systems, or other distributed devices.

High-Bandwidth Memory Architecture

A highly optimized PCI interface and memory controller support high read and write bandwidth, improving system responsiveness when processing large datasets or real-time signals.

Application Scenarios

Industrial Automation Controllers

The board is used as the computing core of industrial automation platforms that require deterministic control processing and integration with VME-based I/O modules.

Aerospace and Defense Systems

Embedded VME computers are widely used in avionics, radar processing, and mission control systems where reliable processing and rugged hardware design are required.

Telecommunications Infrastructure

Network monitoring equipment and communication gateways often rely on embedded computing modules to process traffic data and manage communication protocols.

Test and Measurement Systems
